Persistence pays off in larger bites than dentist expected

Persistence pays off in larger bites than dentist expected

0 Comments | Express & Echo; Exeter (UK), Jul 16, 2010

Who's who NAME AND CURRENT POSITION: Dr Grant McAree, owner of Whyte House Dental Practice and the Dr Grant brand for cosmetic dentistry.

FIRST JOB (AND PAY PACKET): Stacking shelves in a gift shop earning 75p per hour.

WHAT I'VE DONE IN MY CAREER AND HOW I GOT WHERE I AM TODAY: Initially, I failed all my O levels at school. I then retook them all and my A levels at the same time and passed two A levels, but alas at poor grades.

I then went to Podiatry School and completed this training that got me into dentistry two years out of college. I then set up my own dental surgery in Plymouth. Over five years, it grew to become one of the largest private practices in Devon.

The largest dental company in Europe then heard of its success and asked to purchase the practice.

I said no initially, but they persevered and said they really wanted it. After some considerable persuasion I agreed to sell. I then decided that I wanted to set up a personal dental service concentrating on cosmetic dentistry as I felt the last business had became too formally business-focused.

I therefore set up my present dental practice at the Whyte House in Topsham, which will be three years ago this August, to fulfil this new direction I wanted.

CAREER HIGH POINT: Two high points really: selling my last business and getting an A grade from the Eastman Dental Institute for surgical placement of implants.

CAREER LOW POINT: Being newly qualified, not liking the fact that I didn't know everything there was to know and that I had little professional experience.

I was really quite worried about this and considered going abroad and treating African villages in order to fill the knowledge gaps and gain experience.

WHEN I'M NOT WORKING I LIKE TO: Surf (the sea not the internet!), swim with family, share a glass of wine and conversation with my beautiful wife.

THINGS I'VE LEARNED THAT I WISH I'D KNOWN WHEN I STARTED: I wish I could go back and enjoy taking one step at a time instead of rushing to do everything at once.

Over time I have learnt to try not to do everything so fast -- to be patient.

MY ADVICE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN BUSINESS NOW: Be the best you can be and never try to persuade yourself something is right or good enough when it's not. When completing work make sure you are totally satisfied with the quality of it as if it is not, it will always come back to bite you -- for a dentist that's real poetic justice.

Mine disaster puts Massey on edge

Mine disaster puts Massey on edge

0 Comments | Charleston Gazette, The, Apr 10, 2010 | by Tim Huber

Massey Energy Co. said Friday it plans to produce more coal from other mines to help recover from the business damage caused by Monday's deadly Upper Big Branch Mine explosion.

The Raleigh County mine was expected to produce 1.6 million tons of coal over the final nine months of the year. Most of it can be replaced by transferring miners from Upper Big Branch and spare equipment to other mines, Massey said in a regulatory filing.

Federal regulators took control of the mine Monday, shortly after the explosion killed 25 miners. Two others were injured and rescuers still hope to find four missing miners deep inside the sprawling underground mine.

Until regulators finish the rescue and the ensuing investigation, Massey won't be free to get the mine up and running again.

Losing the mine's output would be expensive. Massey said it expected $91 a ton for the rest of the mine's 2010 output, or nearly $146 million in revenue.

"Massey's first focus and immediate focus is the task at hand and saving the miners and dealing with the families," said Michael Dudas, a securities analyst with Jefferies & Co.

"They run a business and they needed to put some parameters around what that business is going to be going forward."

Mentioning business might seem callous, but Dudas and corporate governance experts say Massey had no choice. Public companies such as Massey are required to inform shareholders of big events that could affect their finances by filing details with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Unfortunately, the tragedy has economic consequences for the public company and those who invest in the particular company need to be updated," said Charles Elson from the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware.

"The point is the securities law requires you to keep your shareholders updated and as best as possible fully informed."

Massey had four days to report the explosion's effect on its business under U.S. securities law, said Jim Cox, a securities expert at Duke University School of Law.

"Callousness is one thing, but the law is callous," Cox said.

Massey's regulatory filing also indicated that the explosion isn't expected to affect its $960 million acquisition of Cumberland Resources, which operates mines in Virginia and Kentucky.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter and should help Massey supply enough coal to fulfill contracts that were supposed to get coal from Upper Big Branch, Dudas said.

But that won't be easy

Each child who reads six or more books will receive a medal and certificate, plus a free family swim voucher to use at their local Powys County Council pool.

Gwyn Gwillim, Powys County Council's board member for libraries, said: "It's a great way to keep children entertained over the holidays.

"But more importantly, it encourages children to read more, which is great for developing their skills."

Wanderport's Microwave Energy Tank-less Water Heater Containment and Safety Testing Successful

Wanderport's Microwave Energy Tank-less Water Heater Containment and Safety Testing Successful

Market Wire, May, 2010

Wanderport Corp. (PINKSHEETS: WDRP) today announced testing results concerning containment and safety for its microwave energy tank-less water heater.

Effects of radio frequency interference (RFI) on household and environment:

Wanderport is pleased to report its microwave energy tank-less water heater showed no leakage of radio frequency interference during recent testing. The company stated that the unit should therefore proficiently contain and enclose all RFIs within its structure, thereby preventing radio frequency interference with other household equipment or appliances using 2.4 GHz (the commonly used frequency in home environments, i.e. cordless phones, wireless alarm systems, etc.) This successful RFI testing allows us to confidently seek the desired radio frequency certification in compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) part 15 in the USA and Industry Canada regulations. Other worldwide certification will follow in accordance to the requirements of our existing distributors' jurisdiction.

Testing thermal protection:

Tests confirmed thermal protection will be accomplished by use of a thermocouple to interrupt power and signal a fault should the heater generate excess temperature. The control will also be used to measure ambient temperature in excess of operating range and disable the unit. Moreover, this feature serves to extend the product life by allowing the unit to function only within specified ranges.

Ground fault interruption (GFI):

The unit will incorporate ground fault interruption protection to guard the unit from electric shock and will interrupt the circuit should leakage occur from the water cooled magnetron or capacitors

Falling guttering forces road closure

Falling guttering forces road closure

0 Comments | Herald Express; Torquay (UK), Jul 7, 2010

A TOTNES road had to be closed after loose sections of guttering from a derelict warehouse began crashing to the ground.

Council workmen were forced to move in at around 2.30pm on Friday and make the building in Lower Collins Road safe amid fears that the falling guttering could injure a pedestrian.

The workmen used a cherry-picker to haul down some of the guttering and make the rest safe.

The road was closed for about 45 minutes while the work was done.

A council spokesman said: "Due to the weather and age of the building the guttering became loose and unstable and started falling to the ground.

"Initially the council couldn't contact the owner of the property, and to protect the public the council took action to make it safe.

"The owners will be charged for the work that was carried out."

The old warehouses near the Malt Mill bridge in Lower Collins Road have been standing boarded up and unused for more than a decade.

Tees For The ‘Common People’

Tees For The 'Common People'

0 Comments | Manila Bulletin, Nov 13, 2009

Egalitarianism appears to be on the minds of the countrys leading casualwear brands as they try to expand into other markets. Penshoppe recently hosted a sumptuous sit-down dinner during Philippine Fashion Week to announce that its clothes are not only for teens but for everyone, including the upmarket dinner guests, who can wear their Penshoppe tees with their Marc Jacobs jackets or Chanel bags.

Bench, with its Filipino-inspired new collection and its Pinoy Lab statement tees, says it has united the common people into a fashionable stance, stressing that the brand built on celebrity endorsements is for a large community of people with no specific gender, age, or race. Benchs Pinoy statement tees are fun and can cut across demographicswho can, after all, thumb their noses at an I Heart Adobo shirt? The Filipino formalwear riffs on shirts and jackets are likewise genius. Here are our creatives finally taking aspects of our heritage into wonderful design tangents
